MICHAEL EDWARDS - FOUR MYTHIC PAINTINGS

That wonderful extension to Cambridge cultural life, the Old Fire Engine House in Ely launches a new virtual exhibition. One of their star contributors Michael Edwards, focuses on the fragility of nature and explores a magical mythical  sequence of creatures.

Since 1968 the delightful house and garden in the heart of Ely has opened its doors to art . It is also rightly famous for its teas. Ely women of cookery skills Bake Off contestants can only dream of, rustle up a traditional lunch every day . If you ever have to entertain a Big Eater in the future, remember that the time honoured concept of ‘Seconds” lives on. Not to mention the coffee at 10.30 sharp each morning, you help yourself whilst sruggling to resist the home-baked cake offerings before you. And tea. Is there any more delightful experience in the realm of the afternoon tea, than to gather around the open fire in the Fire Engine House snug with a pot of tea and their speciality toast with gentleman’s relish on toast The management have wisely rejected any modern fandango,’improvements’ or changes.

They are gamely going ahead with AN impressive exhibition. And an extension of their past showings , the sturdy wood cuts of Andy English, the delightful nature artist and illustrator Carry Ackroyd and Fen artist Anthony Day. He was the very first artist to display his work in 1968 and this exhibition is a triumph of 60 years of work in his characterisitc medium of gouache and egg. All his pieces are framed in ash and cost £750

Here’s cheers to the resilient resoutceful Old Fire Engine House. None of us can wait until we are lolling about in their magnificent summer garden with an evening glass . Hopefully nothing will have changed when we do.
