NO CASH LEFT ON THE PREMISES - THE MUSICAL

NO CASH LEFT ON THE PREMISES - THE MUSICAL

I am always a sucker for musicals and have spent a very long lifetime looking for the next great show. Musical comedy is though a huge beast needing a constant supply of fresh melodic and lyrical meat to keep it alive and well. I therefore raise my toupee to anyone trying to produce a completely new play with songs that one can sing and words that scan and say clever things. That’s not to mention the actors who need to act, sing, dance and watch the conductor without falling into the pit.

So it is with some excitement (balanced by some trepidation as the writers and performers I know not) that I offer you ‘No Cash Left on the Premises’. It is a late-night student show at the venerable ADC. To be honest I really liked the title and the synpopsis sent to me by the writers Ben James and Joe Venable.

‘Charli has just turned 50. She’s a small-time burglar bunking with two other low-level crooks: bright but anxious Terri, a cat burglar with the confidence of a mouse; and chronically bungling Bobbi, whose special talent is turning any heist into a multidimensional disaster. Charli senses that life is slipping away - and resolves to pull off one last, sensational heist. Will they swagger off with the swag, or be swept up in the long arms of the law?’

A bank heist musical involving the Crown Jewels sounds like fun and though 11 pm is way past the bedtime of this ancient reviewer, it might well be worth a late-night post-Horlicks trip. For those too tired or timid to go out, the show is also being live streamed to your sofa.

Booking a ticket is surely the least we can do to support our local young actors who have been struggling to rehearse the piece with all Covid restrictions in place. The cast will consist of five actors and a pianist and promises to add sparkle to our revived theatre scene in Cambridge. And who knows – this may be the next big musical blockbuster. That would be worth the Crown Jewels.

No Cash Left on the Premises runs Friday 29 May to Saturday 30 May at 11 pm.

The show is also available on live stream and tickets can be found online
