THE REMAINS OF LOGAN DANKWORTH, BY LUKE WRIGHT

Welcome back the ‘verse play’. It was a form popular in the Romantic period but has had little traction since though exceptions can be recalled including Steven Berkoff’s savagely robust, ‘East’. Now the turbo-charged poet Luke Wright is bringing to Cambridge the third part of his blistering trilogy – ‘The Remains of Logan Dankworth’. I saw Wright as a youngster as a stand-up poet trying out his craft at the Junction ten years ago or more. It was clear then that this brilliant performer had a great career ahead of him as voracious versifier with a razor sharp eye for biting satire and mordant wit. And now he’s back at The Junction with vengeance.

What’s the play about? His press release says: ‘Logan Dankworth, newspaper columnist and Twitter warrior, grew up romanticising the political turmoil of the 1980s. Now, as the EU Referendum looms he is determined to be right there in the fray of the biggest political battle for years. Meanwhile, Logan’s wife Megan wants to leave London to find a better place to raise their daughter. As tensions mount at home and across the nation, something is set to be lost forever.’ That’s good enough for me – I can’t wait to see it.

What’s behind the idea for this modern verse play? Says Luke, ‘The Remains of Logan Dankworth is certainly the most complex and one of the most mature things I’ve written. As with my previous plays there is a personal story occurring against the backdrop of political upheaval. The previous plays dealt with Thatcherism and the legacy of New Labour. This features a man approaching middle age excited by the febrile nature of British politics while trying to hold things together at home.’

Expect verbal fireworks and audacious rhymes. Expect drama. Expect the unexpected. This should be a highlight of the summer.
