ORPHY ROBINSON AND THE CUJO at WEST ROAD
The CUJO ON PARADE all photographs throughout by Mike Harris
When Orphy stalked on stage he struck a stylish figure – orange beanie abandoned , he was the epitome of elegance ,a tall slim frame in a glamour version of evening dress. Hard to believe he has been round the block with music - and played with the American greats of jazz. The student orchestra behind him could surely not help but be impressed as the names rolled around,
ORPHY ROBINSON fronted up this brilliant young band with his own excellent playing . We present a photo montage of the evening as the experienced maestro lead some of the most promising young musicians around. The result was fabulous ,.
Exceptional singers , the same as last year, have come on leaps and bounds. In one calendar twelve months they are stunning, their skat singing almost persuaded me to appreciate this art - and the powerful voices were superb.
Orphy in full swing
From the back row trumpet line up to the superbly talented pianist below, through some sensational brass , the bass saxophonist would rival the best of the 50s and 60s era. As for the percussion, it was brilliantly rendered
Wonderful keyboard
With tunes from contemporary to traditional, here was a jazz orchestra to get everyone in that forties fabulous mood, Orphy was rightly thrilled. Another triumph for the effulgent Jazz Festival where London, New York and yes, Cambridge talent converge
