PRIZEWINNER AT THE FEN DITTON GALLERY

PRIZEWINNER AT THE FEN DITTON GALLERY

Niall MacCrann the Winner of the Fen Dutton Gallery Contemporary Printmaking Competition

Exciting times at the buoyant Fen Ditton Gallery. For five years it has attracted some brilliant young printmakers . They join the under-valued art of printmaking , pioneered in Cambridge by the late Kip Gresham. His skill took printmaking to an extraordinary height and helped an understanding of what the hugely complex and brilliant activity is all about with his creative collaboration with artists or alone. s

At Fen Ditton Gallery the emphasis here is youth and their competition serves as a magnet for all the practitioners in the field ( a section of them below ). Out of this dazzling round up one winner had to emerge. This year Niall MacCrann scooped the pool with a daring mèlange of traditional and ultra contemporary. His chaotic vision'Someone's Firebombed McQuaid's Pharmacy” (below) has the dynamism of an action sci-fi scene blended with Blake’s idyll pastoral drawing. A triumph of the imagination.

What could be a better outing this spectacular Spring than a stroll or bike down the tow path to not-so-sleepy Fen Ditton and the dynamic art gallery there. The exhibition and prize line-up is a selling one, which makes it more of a frisson for visitors.
