A GAP IN THE CLOUDS -HEONG GALLERY

‘A Gap in the Clouds’ is the elusive title of the Heong Gallery’s sensational new show. It is so impressive it feels as if the Heong Galley has had enough of the margins and now steps confidently centre stage in the Cambridge Art world . For too long the under-appreciated Heong has presented one fabulous exhibition after another - I have hardly ever got over the drama and threat of their Hurricane linked special - it was simply terrifying ( and all done in collaboration with real live vulcanologists). But did it get the acclaim it deserved? Despite the Cambridge Critique rave reviews .

Now in this exhibit of landscapes connected to mood and emotion a brilliant range of awesome drawings and paintings knit the great work of artists to their inner selves. And what work it is! Yes that is Edvard Munch on the wall, a figure stooped in complex mental pain , or the inimitable Paul Nash with a thoughtful Spring study full of quiet calm contemplation

And finally, but the greatest artist of our time can never really be final, Ai Wei Wei ‘s Wheatfield with Crows, It is a massive picture made from lego , a take on Van Gogh’s last painting, painful as that was, this work substitutes drones for the black crows of Vincent’s imagination, and in doing so propels the anguish oft the original into the activism Ai We Wei is famous for..

There are other works, ( listed below ) and the show is a great exploration.

At last the Heong will step into the limelight.
