MARTIN BOND - LIGHT AND SHADE

Staff watch the fireworks at St. John’s College

Already super well known – and celebrated as Cambridge’s premier photographer, Martin Bond blends a keen eye with a sense of beauty, a near atmospheric master of mood with a sense of humour. In his new book Light and Shade, he experiments with juxtaposing the secret and intimate with the public face of Cambridge Life

Art Deco House in Cambridge

The Sun House - A glass staircase is just one of the lovely components of an Art Deco-style house in Queen Edith’s Way. Built in 1938 and named The Sun House, it was designed by W. A. Cairns, with features including sweeping curves, enormous bay windows to the front, a canopy above the sun terrace, arched doorways — and a built-in cocktail bar

Mietziko the St John’s Cat - Mietziko’s friendship with a professor of Physics ensures that life at St John’s College comes with its perks — proving the old adage that who you know can be every bit as important as what you know.

Window on St. John ‘s Bridge

St John’s Kitchen Bridge from the Wren Library window - The floor of the Wren Library is positioned about ten feet below the level of the windows, a deliberate design choice in 1676, to keep students focused on their studies rather than gazing outside and daydreaming. As a result, the only view of the river is from a window on the staircase that leads to the Library, where you can glimpse St John’s College’s Kitchen Bridge — also designed by Wren some twenty years later

Intriguing house alone

Warren House - Always assumed to be an 18th-century eye-catcher for Kimbolton Castle, the Warren House in Kimbolton is a unique timber-framed warren lodge dating back to the 1630s. In 2005, the derelict building came into the care of the Landmark Trust, which has restored it as a self-sustaining holiday let.

King’s College Chapel West Door - Can you spot Freddie, one of the Provost’s cats, peeping  inside the West Door of King's College Chapel?
